When I saw Transformers on July 4th 2007 I will openly admit I went in biased. I’m a big fan of the classic toys, cartoon, and comics. Strangely though, unlike most Transfans, I was over the new look of the Bots months before the movie came out. I figured “Hey, they look strange but I’ll let that go and enjoy the film.” We’ve all seen the movie by now so I wont review the whole thing, but overall I didn’t like the film. The plot was okay for audiences that had no Transformers history and fans could go with it. SFX were impressive, and Michael Bay is the king of Action scenes so I did enjoy me some explosions. But overall I felt the film was lacking. I’ve heard excuses from fans of the film that Bay was making a film for all ages. I argue that Masturbation jokes and pissing on one another is definitely not suitable for all ages. Comic relief is fine but in small doses. I don’t want to get on a rant so I’ll stop here saying that I was just disappointed by the first film. The potential was there and they just didn’t knock it out of the park.
That said I’m still an uber nerd and I check up on the new film from time to time. I saw some footage from the filming (here in my hometown of Long Beach , Ca). And I’ll admit as usual, the action in this one looks great, but that was to be expected.
I want to put it there out right here and now, I think a may like the sequel. I believe that if Michael Bay sticks to Action and Spectacle and stays away from a plot, any attempts at character development and copious abuse of comic relief this film will be a fun ride. And I think that even extremely hard to please fans like myself could watch it and say “Hell it was entertaining.”
